who can tryout?
join our world famous high school dance program
Dancers must fall into one of the following categories to audition for dance team or mkam hip hop:
- Dancers must be planning to attend OR already attending Mark Keppel High School for any grades 9-12. Dancers who meet this criteria can tryout during our April auditions.
- If the dancer is currently NOT an MKHS student, they must be willing to transfer to MKHS for the following school year. Dancers who meet this criteria can tryout by video anytime between January and April, OR they can also attend our in-person auditions in April of each year. Dancers will also need to request a permit from their school district. In most cases, students will be granted permission to enroll at MKHS based on enrollment into our Honors dance company program. But since MKHS is a high-performing academic institution, we recommend that dancers submit their tryout by video to guarantee the best chance of enrollment.
mkam (ALL MALE HIP HOP)
The MKHS All Male Dance Team is world renowned! You may have seen us on Season 3 of NBC's "World of Dance" starring Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough & Ne-Yo. Or maybe you saw us recently during the Season 15 quarterfinals of "America's Got Talent". Dancers who are accepted into MKAM receive training in all dance genres, but specialize in street dance styles, hip hop, and acro-gymnastics skills and tricks. No prior experience necessary (read that last part again!)
DANCE TEAM
Dancers with intermediate-advanced dance skills and technical training are encouraged to audition for the MKHS Dance Team, which specializes in all dance styles: Contemporary, Hip Hop, Jazz, Lyrical, Pom, Military, and more! Students who are accepted into Dance Team receive extensive training in all dance styles, with an emphasis on flexibility, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, and acro-gymnastics skills.
empire
Our elite competition team is called Empire! This competitive dance troupe is composed of the strongest dancers from both MKAM & Dance Team. Students must be accepted into either MKAM or Dance Team following auditions in order to have an opportunity to audition for Empire (closed audition process only open to current student members). More information regarding Empire audition requirements will be provided during summer training.
